Monaghan County Teams Stories from 2011

Monaghan Ready to Take one the Mighty Cork - 21st Sept 2011

This Sunday sees the much awaited All Ireland senior championship final between Monaghan and Cork. In 2008, Cork proved too strong for the Monaghan girls, many who will be in action again this Sunday. This time the team are more mature and experienced and judging from their performances all year, they are well ready for the challenge ahead.

The management team of Gregory Mc Gonigle, Peter Clarke, John Downey and back up team of Fiona Kindlon, Arlene and Jimmy have left no stone unturned in preparation for Sunday's game.

Indeed Monaghan started their league campaign in flying form, unbeaten until the semi final stages. They met Cork, Sunday's opponents in Emyvale and came out victorious. Cork however were missing some of their big names. In the semi final however, Laois once again proved a stumbling block for Monaghan denying them a national league final spot. All sights were now set on the championship. First up was Armagh with Monaghan having a very comprehensive win. Next up was Down, and once again Monaghan proved too strong. Next up was their Ulster final where they were up against last year's All Ireland finalists Tyrone. Another excellent display by the Monaghan girls beating Tyrone convincingly. Confidence was growing with every game ,and the belief that maybe this could be thier year was becoming more evident. Then it was Meath in the quarter finals , a team that had knocked the reigning All Ireland champions out of the Leinster championship. and once again another powerful display by the Monaghan girls ensured them of a semi final spot. Kerry was now the only team in their way. A blistering start by the Monaghan girls saw them forge ahead, but then at the start of the second half, Kerry staged a magnificant comeback. For the first time in the championship, the Monaghan girls went behind. Now was the time to see what this team's character was like. And indeed spurred on by their captain Sharon Courtney, they showed everyone the magnificant character that this team has. They surged ahead in the final 15 minutes of the game. Kerry were unable to stop them and when the final whistle blew, it was back to Croke Park again for this wonderful group of players.

Cork, their opponents on Sunday have been improving as the year has gone on and are now back to their very best. They showed great composure and experience against Dublin in the quarter finals when they came back from the dead to snatch victory just at the end. Then in the semi final they had a convincing over Laois.

We are going to see 2 great teams in action this Sunday. Over the past 6 years Cork have been the best team in the country, but Monaghan have been steadily building. They have a wealth of talent on their side and if they all play to their potential, they will push Cork every inch of the way. In their panel they are lucky to have 2 of the top goalkeepers in the province and indeed the country. Their defence has been excellent all year. They may not be the most physical of players, but what they might lack in physique, they make up for in courage, guts and committement. They also have the speed to push forward when needed. They have I believe one of the most hard working midfield pairings . Up front, they have players whose speed has tormented so many teams this year and who are willing to cover every blade of grass on the pitch if need be. As was evident against Kerry, they have people on the bench who can make a big impact when needed.

To beat Cork on Sunday, each and everyone of the players will have to play to their potential. Cork will want to make up for their huge disappointment last year but Monaghan will want to make up for the disappointment of losing out to Cork in 2008.

A great game in prospect and we urge all of Monaghan to come out on Sunday and give this team the support they deserve.

Monaghan panel Linda Martin, Edel Corrigan, Grainne Mc Nally, Sharon Courtney capt, Christine Reilly vice capt, Aoife Mc Anespie, Nicola Fahy, Lavina Connolly, Amanda Casey, Cora Courtney, Ellen Mc Carron, Therese Mc Nally, Catriona Mc Connell, Caoimhe Mohan, Niamh Kindlon, Ciara Mc Anespie, Isobel Kierans, Laura Mc Eneaney, Eileen Mc Elroy, Una Mc Nally,Natasha Mohan, Niamh Lynch, Joanne Courtney, Laura Boylan, Margaret Treanor, Emma Byrne, Louise Byrne, Barbara Ward, Eileen Mc Kenna, Shauna Coyle

On behalf of the county board I would like to thank everyone who has helped out in any way over the past few weeks. Monaghan U16 Girls Hoping to Bring Home First Underage
Ulster Title For 2011 - 28th July 2011

2011 hasn't been a successful year for the county underage teams with both our U14 and  minor teams failing to take home silverware. However our U16 team are hoping to change that this Saturday when they play hot favourites Tyrone in the Ulster final in Donagh. This team has been preparing away quietly under the guidance of team manager Seamus Murray.  Seamus has brought silverware back to Monaghan when he managed the successful U14 team last year. A lot of this years U16 team have played under Seamus at U14 level and they will know what is required to win that title. Equally Seamus knows the qualities the girls possess and having worked with them for a number of years, they all have a great mutual respect for each other.

Monaghan met Tyrone earlier in the league in Emyvale and were beaten quite well on the night, but as Seamus stated when I talked to him earlier in the week, Monaghan will have learnt a lot from that defeat. He felt it gave them a chance to work on their deficiences and after having a few challenge games, he believes the girls have stepped up their game and are well ready for the task in hand. I asked him did he feel the long break would be a problem for the girls as it has been quite some time since their last competitive match. He felt that the girls are probably more prepared now and are more focused on what they need to do. That defeat against Tyrone made them ask some questions of themselves, and to be fair to the girls,  they have responded in a very positive way. Martin Woods the coach has put in a great effort at training with the girls and the girls have responded  in a similar way. They have been working very hard and the training has been very intense. Seamus stated that he wanted to thank the girls for their great effort and hopes that that effort will be rewarded on Saturday.  Going back to the game in Emyvale, Seamus pointed out that the Tyrone forwards caused Monaghan a lot of problems, but over the past number of weeks Seamus and his management team have worked on their defence and how to contain the Tyrone forwards . He is confident that the girls can put in a performance capable of beating Tryone. They have worked really hard and no stone has been left unturned in their preparations for Saturday.

Monaghan Senior lades captured the Ulster title against Tyrone a few weeks back and let's hope our U16 girls can do likewise this Saturday. They have been putting in the same effort as our senior girls and we hope that that effort is awarded this Saturday.

On behalf of the county board we wish Seamus and his management team  and players the very best of luck this Saturday. We ask that you come out in your numbers to give these girls your support. I have personally seen at first hand the effort they are putting in, so I would encourage everyone to come out on Saturday.

The venue for Saturday's game is Donagh in Fermanagh. Throw in 3.00pm

Monaghan's Powerful Display Ensures O’Harte Cup Stays in the Farney County - July 12th 2011

Monaghan senior ladies defended their  Ulster title superbly on Sunday last with a convincing win over All Ireland finalists Tyrone. This was a powerful team display, right from the goalkeeper Edel Corrigan to the full forward line. Despite what the scoreline may suggest, Tyrone were no push over and however hard Tyrone tried to keep in touch, the excellent Monaghan defence couldn't be breached. The opening few minutes of the game saw Tyrone take the lead with Aisling O Kane scoring the opening point. Excellent defending by Grainne Mc Nally denied them a further score. Monaghan's first score came from some great team work by the Monaghan forwards . Ellen Mc Carron found Ciara McAnespie who released the ball to Caoimhe Mohan who fired over a great point. This was followed by another great move involving Niamh Kindlon and Ciara Mc Anespie resulting in Therese Mc Nally scoring her first point of the day. Tyrone continued to push forward and were awarded a free with Gemma Begley making no mistake in converting. Niamh Kindlon then got her own name on the scoresheet with a point. Tyrone equalised once again with Gemma Begley converting a free to put the sides all square on 3 points each with 9 minutes of the half gone. Ellen Mc Carron put Monaghan ahead again but once again Gemma Begley converted a free to square matters up once again. Then came the first goal of the day. Caoimhe Mohan found Ciara Mc Anespie who after a manacing run found Niamh Kindlon who fired to the corner of the net. This goal gave Monaghan the momentum. A great ball from Ciara Mc Anespie to Caoimhe Mohan who was fouled, resulted in another point for Niamh Kindlon who converted the resulting free. This was followed by a point from the hard working Cora Courtney to put Monaghan 1-6 to 4 points ahead with 18 minutes of the half gone. Cathy Donnelly pulled one back for Tyrone but a free converted excellently  by Ellen Mc Carron kept 5 points between the sides. An excellent point from the dangerous Gemma Begley reduced Monaghan's lead to 4 points and a great save by Edel Corrigan denied Tyrone what looked like a certain goal. Monaghan responded with the hard working Ciara Mc Anespie finding Ellen Mc Carron who fired over for her 3rd point of the day.Gemma added another point for Tyrone but then came Monaghan's second goal of the day with just 2 minutes of the half remaining. Great work involving Niamh Kindlon and Ciara Mc Anespie found Caoimhe Mohan who rattled the Tryone net to leave Monaghan going in at the break 2-8 to 0-7 in the lead.

Tyrone came out all guns blazing at the start of the second half with Cathy Donnelly firing over a point in the first minute, but Monaghan responded almost immediately when Eileen Mc Elroy who was introduced for Monaghan at the break started off a great move which resulted in  Therese Mc Nally scoring her second point of the day. Eileen Mc Elroy then got her name on the scoresheet with a fine point and Ciara Mc Anespie followed with another fine point to put Monaghan 2-11 to 0-8 up with just 5 minutes of the second half gone.Gemma Begley added 2 points for Tyrone one from a free, to narrow the gap but that was all Tyrone could muster in the second half with the Monaghan defence holding firm with some excellent defending. Further points from the excellent Therese Mc Nally and Niamh Kindlon increased Monaghan's lead further before Caoimhe Mohan scored Monaghan's first goal of the second half and her second of the day to put the game beyond Tyrone's reach. With just 9 minutes remaining Tyrone did try to close the gap but once again some excellent defending by the Monaghan backs kept them at bay and Monaghan added another 4 unanswered points in the final 5 minutes to leave the final score

Monaghan 3-18   Tryone   0-10

Monaghan must now wait to see who their opponents will be in the All Ireland quarter finals, but they have to be happy with their performance last Sunday. It was an exceptional all round team performance with the first half very much nip and tuck until Monaghan got the 2 goals. Edel Corrigan once again was very reliable in goals with her save from Orla O Neill being crucial.  The full back line were once again outstanding. Tryone had 3 All Stars in their forward line but the Monaghan defence once again proved that they are probably one of the best in the country. The half back line once again got involved in everything that was going on, defending well and at the same time linking up with the midfield and half forward lines to start up the attacks. Amanda Casey and Cora Coutney once again worked tirelessly in midfield and a superb catch by Amanda Casey in defence in the second half kept Tyrone out. The half forward line as usual were superb with Therese Mc Nally receiving Player of the Match. Not alone did Therese score 4 points, but she was everywhere on the pitch helping out where ever needed. The full forward line caused the Tyrone defence serious problems. Once again the speed of Ciara Mc Anespie and Caoimhe Mohan played a big factor ,  and the experience of Niamh Kindlon at full forward proved a thorn in the side of the Tryone defence. This was Niamh's first game being started since her knee operation and what a performance she put in scoring 1-4. This performance should give Monaghan the confidence now to go all the way. Knowing the team and management, they will sit down and have a look at areas where they can improve on . Their aim is to get back to Croke Park and if they are to achieve this, they will have to continue working hard and putting in performances like that which they put in on Sunday. Tyrone on the other hand lost out at the Ulster semi final stages last year, but as we all know they regrouped and ended up coming through the qualifier stages beating Cork in the quarter finals and reaching the All Ireland finals.

COUNTY U16s

With our senior girls securing the first silverware of the year for the county, all hopes of underage silverware now lies with our U16 team. Antrim failed to field in last weekend's game so Monaghan are now in the Ulster final against Tyrone. This final is down for July 30th. This has been a difficult campaign for all as  there has been such a break between games and with girls involved with exams. Training has been continuing however and a lot of work has been going into preparing the girls. It was disappointing that they didn't get a game last weekend, but with a place in the finals now secured, it will be all systems go from now on. This group of girls need your support and we ask that you come out in your numbers to give them that support on Ulster final day. Training continues for all involved tonight in Cloghan. All girls are encouraged to put in a big effort in preparation for the Tryone game.

Monaghan Head to Clones on Sunday to Take on
All Ireland Finalists Tyrone in Ulster Final

This Sunday all roads lead to Clones, where the Monaghan senior ladies aim to retain their Ulster title against last year's All Ireland finalists Tyrone. The Monaghan girls were in fine form all year in the league unbeaten until the semi final. In their championship games to date, they weren't really tested. Tyrone on the other hand had that tough encounter against Donegal in the semi final. They had an up and down league campaign, but like last year showed, it is the performances in the championship that count. Tyrone have been improving steadily all year and will be out to stop Monaghan win 2 in a row, just like they done in 2009. Monaghan/ Tyrone games have always provided fast flowing football, and Sunday should be no different. Both have forwards with lightning speed and the game will probably be decided on which defence holds out best.

I spoke to manager Gregory Mc Gonigle and team captain Sharon Courtney during the week. First I asked Gregory what he felt about Sunday's game.
He said that he was really pleased to be in the Ulster final once again, and as a group they were really looking forward to the final. The team have been training very hard and after the rounds of club championships management have had full access to all the county players. Gregory wished to put on record his thanks to the clubs for their co-operation and the fixtures committee, who facilitated his request to have round 2 of the championship put back to facilitate this. He feels that as a team things are going well and that they are playing with great confidence. In recent weeks, the players have really upped the intensity in training. This has left himself and the rest of the management team with the difficult task of selecting the team. He believes that it will probably take the full compliment of subs to beat Tyrone. Tyrone are an excellent side who ended Cork's great run last year and reached the All Ireland final in Croke park. Gregory mentioned the fact that he has coached quite a number of Tyrone girls through his time as UUJ manager and also as Ulster manager. He mentioned Gemma Begley and the 2 Donnelly sisters Joeline and Cathy who all received All Stars last year. He believes that they are as good as forwards there is in the current game and that Monaghan will have to really perform if they are to retain their Ulster title and will need some huge performances all over the park. Tyrone he believes, have improved as the year has gone on and will be a serious threat to Monaghan's ambitions to claim another Ulster title.

I also spoke to team captain Sharon Courtney, and asked her how she felt about Sunday's game and if she was confident going into the game . She said there was a great buzz in the camp and that she was confident. She felt the team have been playing good football up to now and that things have been going well in training. She said that Tyrone have always given Monaghan a tough game and that Sunday's match would be just as tough as previous championship games Monaghan have played against them. When asked about what Tyrone players we should be watching for, she said that they have a very lively forward line consisting of 3 current All Stars. They put up a very high score in their semi final against Donegal and that the Monaghan defense will have to be on top of their game. She believes preparations have been going very well. The team are just back from a weekend away in Letterkenny where they got the opportunity to play Donegal. In between collective training sessions since the semi final against Armagh, a round of club championship games have been played so most of the girls have got a game recently. This she believes has been a great help. There should also be a full panel available as the few that had injuries are now back in full training. Sharon believes that the introduction of a number of new young players has been great for the team. The young girls have really mixed in well and the team bonding weed end away helped a lot with that. A few have made their championship debuts this year and she thinks that this is a help as there is a renewed hunger in the team. These new players also bring something different to the team that other counties wouldn't be aware of.

As Gregory and Sharon have said, Sunday will be a tough and exciting encounter. Both teams have served up some mouth watering games in the past and I am sure Sunday will be no different. Monaghan will be keen to retain their title but Tyrone will be out to stop them in their tracks. We ask that you come out in your numbers on Sunday to lend your support to this fantastic bunch of girls. The game is in Clones. Throw in 3.30pm. On behalf of the county board we wish the team and management the very best of luck.

Monaghan defeat Laois - Notes 29th March 2011
Monaghan Hold out for a Thrilling Win
Monaghan travelled to Laois on Sunday last unbeaten in the league, but knowing that they haven't beaten Laois for quite a number of years.  Monaghan made a few changes to their usual line out. Linda Martin came into goals. Una Mc Nally returned to the full back position after an injury, and Niamh Lynch started on the half back line. Natasha Mohan started up front replacing the injured Ellen Mc Carron.

With the wind advantage, Monaghan started promisingly and were unlucky not to open with a goal with just 2 minutes gone. Ciara Mc Anespie slotted the ball in the incoming Grainne Mc Nally who was marginally off target. Laois were first to get on the scoring sheet with their number 12 Sinead Doogue scoring a lovely point. Monaghan were quick to respond with the excellent Christina Reilly breaking out from the Monaghan defense. She found Natasha Mohan who released the ball to Therese Mc Nally who fired over the bar. Another great move saw Aoife Mc Anespie and Lavina Connolly combine to find Catriona Mc Connell who added another fine point. Monaghan forwards then defended excellently putting pressure on the Laois defense causing them to overcarry. The resulting free was easily converted by Catriona Mc Connell to put Monaghan 3-1 up with 7 minutes of the first half gone. Both sides were guilty of a number of wides before a burst through on goal by Mary Kirwan resulted in a point reducing Monaghan's lead to just a single point. Tracey Lawlor added another excellent point to square matters up.Both sides exchanged points, with Therese Mc Nally adding 2 for Monaghan and Mary Kirwan and Martina Dunne scoring for Laois to leave the sides level once again with just 5 minutes of the half remaining. Monaghan finished the stronger adding 2 further points, a free from Catriona Mc Connell and a point from play from Ciara Mc Anespie.

Half time score Monaghan 0-7 Laois 0-5

Laois dominated the opening minutes of the second half and within 4 minutes they had equalised with 2 excellent points from Tracey Lawlor .Martha Kirwan put Laois in front and Laois went further in front with a point from their number 10 . It was all Laois now, and were it not for some excellent defending by Monaghan and in particular Christina Reilly, Monaghan could have went further behind. Monaghan also missed a number of chances to close the gap but Monaghan did regain the lead once again when Catriona Mc Connell scored from the penalty spot in the 17th minute after Amanda Casey was fouled. Tracey Lawlor leveled the scores once again and then a mistake by Monaghan allowed Laois through and Maureen Young hit the net to put Laois back in front again. With 10 minutes to go the score was Laois 1-10 Monaghan 1-7. The last 10 minutes saw Monaghan show great character, and with 6 minutes to go, Ciara Mc Anespie went on one of her weaving runs and fired the ball to the back of the net to level matters once again. It was end to end action for the last minutes of the game but it was Catriona Mc Connell who stepped up with 3 minutes on the clock remaining to leave just a single point between the sides. Those last 3 minutes saw the Monaghan girls keep possession and they held out for a thrilling win.

Final Score Monaghan 2-8 Laois 1-10

Line Out Linda Martin, Christina Reilly, Una Mc Nally, Lavina Connolly, Aoife Mc Anespie, Niamh Lynch, Sharon Courtney Nicola Fahy, Amanda Casey, Natasha Mohan, Therese Mc Nally (0-3), Cora Courtney, Catriona Mc Connell (1Penalty 4(2f) ),Grainne Mc Nally, Ciara Mc Anespie (1-1) Subs used Niamh Kindlon, Margaret Treanor

With just 1 more game remaining, Monaghan remain top of the table with Cork and Donegal just 3 points behind. The fight for 4th place will go right down to the wire with Tyrone, Laois and Galway all still in with a chance of securing that semi final position. Monaghan have their final game this Sunday when they take on Donegal who have been very impressive to date only losing out to Cork. This game is in Truagh at 2 pm and we ask that you make a special effort to come out and support these girls.

Also on behalf of the ladies co board, county team and management a big thank you to Eugene O Gorman Super Value Carrickmacross who has kindly agreed to sponsor drinks for all away games for the senior ladies team. This is very much appreciated by all concerned.

U14S
MONAGHAN SUFFER DEFEAT AT THE HANDS OF A VERY IMPRESSIVE DONEGAL SIDE
Monaghan U14 A team opened their league campaign on Sunday last against a very strong Donegal side in Tyholland. Monaghan's opening game had been cancelled due to the weather, and not having had a chance to have some competitive games under their belt proved very costly . On the day they had no answer for a very talented Donegal side. Donegal have proved over the past number of years that their underage teams are a real force to be reckoned with and that was evident on Sunday last. Monaghan were only able to score 2 points in the first half ,the first coming from Christina Mc Mahon and the second coming from Eimear O Rourke who gave everything she had throughout the game. The scoreline going into the break was Donegal 5-7 Monaghan 0-2.
Monaghan had given themselves too much to do in the second half, but to their credit they never gave up and Lorraine Lambe scored Monaghan's only goal of the game and also added a point. Donegal continued to push forward and added another 2 goals and 8 points to their total to leave the final score Donegal 7-15 Monaghan 1-3.
It was very disappointing for the team and mentors as this group of girls showed great promise at the Ulster blitz and on Sunday last they just didn't do themselves justice. They must lift themselves now for the remainder of the league and try to put last's weeks game to the back of their minds. Their next game is on Saturday 9th April. Details next week

Monaghan defeat Kildare - Notes 8th March 2011
Excellent Second Half Performance Helps Monaghan Keep Their 100% Record in Division 1

Monaghan retained their 100% record in the Bord Gais League Division 1 won, with a 2-15 to 1-7 win over Kildare in Monasterevin on Sunday last. Monaghan went into this game without key defenders Una Mc Nally and Sharon Courtney but a stunning second half performance saw them deservedly earn maximum points.

Monaghan were guilty of a few wides in the opening minutes, and indeed it was Kildare who were first to score with a point from their number 10 Deirdre Gateley. Monaghan went on the counter attack but the attack was broken down resulting in Kildare's Aine Gateley scoring a fine individual point putting the home side 2 points clear. Monaghan responded with 2 points in succession, one from Therese Mc Nally, the other from Catriona Mc Connell leaving the sides all square with 13 minutes of the first half gone. Kildare's Deirdre Gateley scored again for Kildare to put them a point ahead. A great move involving Aoife Mc Anespie, Cora Courtney, Therese Mc Nally and Ciara Mc Anespie resulted in Monaghan being awarded a free which Catriona Mc Connell made no mistake in converting. Then came the first goal of the game and what a cracking goal it was. Therese Mc Nally won the ball on the 45 metre line and after a great run fired the ball to the corner of the net to put Monaghan ahead for the first time in the game. Immediately afterwards, Edel Corrigan denied Kildare a goal with an excellent save. Monaghan upped the tempo with their forwards putting pressure on the Kildare defence. Ciara Mc Anespie was quickest to react to a Catriona Mc Connell free coming off the post, and with her left foot fired over the bar. A free converted by Kildare's Catriona O Malley left just a goal between the teams. A mistake in the Monaghan defence allowed Kildare's Noelle Earley through on goal to level the scores once again. Deirdre Gateley added another point, her 3rd of the day to put Kildare in front but Catriona Mc Connell finished the scoring of the half with another point to leave the sides all square going into the break.

Half time score Monaghan 1-5 Kildare 1-5

Whatever was said to the Monaghan girls at half time seemed to work, because as soon as the ball was threw up, Monaghan's Amanda Casey went on a surging run through the middle releasing the ball to Caoimhe Mohan who scored her first point of the evening. This was followed by a point from Ellen Mc Carron. Kildare responded with 2 points in succession, one from Noelle Earley and the other from Tamara Timmons to square up matters once again with just 8 mins of the second half gone. Indeed this was to be Kildare's last score of the game as Monaghan completely dominated the remainder of the game. Natasha Mohan was introduced for Monaghan with Grainne Mc Nally being moved back into the full back line. Monaghan's half back line came more and more into the game pushing forward at every opportunity, linking up with the forwards causing the Kildare defence numerous problems. Therese Mc Nally put Monaghan in the lead with another fine point and a free converted by Catriona Mc Connell put Monaghan 2 up with 12 mins of the second half gone. Kildare tried to respond but some excellent defending by Monaghan and in particular by Cora Courtney who must have covered every inch of the pitch on Sunday, kept them at bay. Another fine point from Ciara Mc Anespie followed. Monaghan's forwards were now tormenting the Kildare defence with their lightning speed, and great work by Caoimhe Mohan resulted in another free for Monaghan. Once again Catriona Mc Connell made no mistake in converting. With 18 minutes of the second half gone, Monaghan led 1-11 to 1-7 up. The momemtum was really with Monaghan now with Monaghan's half back Aoife Mc Anespie getting her name on the scoresheet with a well worked point. With 10 mins to go there was a great roar from the Monaghan supporters, as Niamh Kindlon made her much welcome return to county action following a long lay off. Emma Byrne and Joanne Courtney were also introduced. It was all Monaghan now, and further points from Therese Mc Nally, Caoimhe Mohan and Ciara Mc Anespie put the game beyond reach for the Kildare girls. Catriona Mc Connell reacted quickly to a poor Kildare kick out, and lobbed the ball over the goalkeeper's head to finish off what was a great second half for the Monaghan girls.
Final score Monaghan 2-15 Kildare 1-7

This result leaves Monaghan 3 points clear at the top of Division 1, with 3 games remaining. However, if Monaghan are to remain serious contenders for the league title, they must play like they did in the final 20 minutes of last Sunday's game for the full 60 minutes.

Line out: Edel Corrigan, Christine Reilly, Isobel Kierans, Margaret Treanor, Lavina Connolly, Nicola Fahy, Aoife Mc Anespie(0-1), Cora Courtney, Amanda Casey, Ellen Mc Carron (0-1), Therese Mc Nally (1-3 1f), Grainne Mc Nally, Ciara Mc Anespie (0-3), Caoimhe Mohan (0-2), Catriona Mc Connell (1-5 3f) Subs used Natasha Mohan, Niamh Kindlon, Emma Byren, Joanne Courtney.

Next Sunday they travel to Galway. Galway have always proved a difficult side to overcome and will be no different this Sunday. Venue for Sunday's game is Mountbellow. Throw in 2pm. Referee J Niland

Once again thanks to all who travelled to the game on Sunday. Your support was greatly appreciated.

U14S

Both our u14 teams travelled to the Ulster blitz in Cookstown on Saturday last. This was great preparations for both teams as they get ready for their respective Ulster championships. Our A team were first up against a strong Donegal side and put up an excellent performance winning in the end by a single point. Next up for them was Derry with the Monaghan girls once again coming out on top with a very impressive display. Monaghan finished top of their group and came up against a strong Armagh side in the semi final. Monaghan got off to the worst possible start conceding a number of goals. They fought back well in the second half, but with just 10 mins a half they had given themselves too much to do. In the end Armagh deserved their win and in fact went on to win the final.

A panel: Amy Coyle, Celine Nally, Chloe Woods, Christina Mc mahon, Eimear O Rourke, Eodain O Callaghan,Eimear Finnegan, Eva Woods, Emma Clerkin, Grainne Mc Kenna, Hannah Finnegan, Hannah Clerkin, Laura Lavelle, Laura Duffy, Lorraine lambe, Megan Gartlan, Niamh Treanor, Niamh Tibby, Sarah Conlon, Rosemary Conlon, Tori Carolan, Rebecca Hughes, Micheala Mc Cabe.

Monaghan also entered a B team in the blitz. In their section they came up against Down B, Derry B, Tyrone B and Fermanagh. The first game against Down was a closely contested game with Monaghan coming out on top. They then lost to Derry and Tyrone but a win against Fermanagh saw them qualify for the B Plate final against Down. This final was an excellent game of football with end to end action. At the end of full time the sides couldn't be separated and both teams had to take 5 20 metre free kicks to decide the winner. The Monaghan girl's held their nerve and came out victorious much to the delight of all the girls.

B panel: Leanne Ward, Micheala Mc Skane, Ciara Mc Carron, Shauna Mohan, Amy Finn, Hanna Mc Skeane, Emer Mc Nally, Orla Mc Eneaney, Megan Burn, Noelle Duffy, Brianan Sherry, Megan Boylan, Caoimhe Mohan, Holly Martin, Amy Keenan, Dolores Hughes, Lauren Jones, Ellen O Brien, Emer Mc Anespie, Emer Lynch, Niamh Callan.

Both these panel of girls done themselves proud at the weekend. A number of players from both teams were absent due to other commitments but will be available for the upcoming league.

This weekend sees the start of the U14 Ulster league, with the A team in action against Down. The game is fixed for Latton as part of a double header with the minor team. Throw in for the U14 game is 2pm. We wish Alice and her team the very best of luck. The full panel for Saturday's game will be made know to the players at training this week.

The B team have a bye this weekend, but will be training as normal in Cloghan at 12 on Saturday. Their first league game is away to Antrim on Saturday 19th March. Details next week.

Monaghan Beat Cork - Notes 22nd Feb 2011

Seniors - Monaghan make it 3 wins out of 3

Monaghan held out against Cork to continue their 100% start in Division 1, the final score being 1-13 to 2-7.

Monaghan took advantage of a strong breeze in the first half racing into a 5 point lead with just 10 mins gone. Ellen Mc Carron opened the scoring for Monaghan after 3 minutes and this was followed by an excellent point from play from Therese Mc Nally. Monaghan's forwards were once again causing problems with some excellent movement. Their efforts were rewarded with a free on the 40 metre line which was converted by Catriona Mc Connell. Monaghan were unlucky not to score a goal when an excellent run by Ciara Mc Anespie found Ellen Mc Carron who was inches off tartet. Therese Mc Nally increased Monaghan's lead with another point from a free and it was Ellen Mc Carron once again who put Monaghan 5 points up with just 10 mins gone. Cork came storming back and on the 12th minute Amy O Shea fired to the back of the net and a point from a free from Valerie Mulcahy reduced Monaghan's lead to just 1 point. Monaghan replied with a point from Caoimhe Mohan before Valarie Mulcahy added another point for Cork. The last 8 minutes of the opening half saw Monaghan take control once again. Ciara Mc Anespie reacted quickest to Amanda Casey's shot off the crossbar to score Monaghan's first goal. Monaghan then hit 3 points from play , with Ciara Mc Anespie on target again and Catriona Mc Connell and Grainne Mc Nally scoring the other 2. This left Monaghan going into the break 7 points up.

Half time score Monaghan 1-9 Cork 1-2

With the wind advantage now with Cork, Monaghan had to soak up the Cork pressure in the second half. Indeed it was Cork who opened the scoring with points from Amy O Shea and Grace Kearney. Ciara Mc Anespie responded with a fine point but Juliette Murphy scored from a free narrowing the gap to 5 points. Cork continued to pile on the pressure and they were awarded a penalty in the 12th minute after Edel Corrigan was adjudged to have footblocked. Valerie Mulcahy made no mistake and a further point by Cork's centre half forward Orlagh Farmer left just 1 point between the teams. Monaghan showed great character and didn't panic and 2 points in succession from Ellen Mc Carron and a Catriona Mc Connell free put Monaghan 3 points in front with 12 minutes remaining.
Margaret Treanor was introduced for Monaghan and Cork pushed forward looking to narrow the gap, but excellent defending by Monaghan kept them at bay. Valarie Mulcahy did reduce the lead to 2 converting another free, but Monaghan held out and the final score of the half, a free from Catriona Mc Connell put Monaghan 3 points up once again. The final whistle blew much to the delight of the Monaghan supporters.
Final score Monaghan 1-13 Cork 2-7

Monaghan's win now leaves them top of the table ahead of Donegal on score difference. Another great display with all 6 forwards on target during the course of an impressive attacking display. Monaghan had to withstand a spirited fightback from the league holders but their defence showed great character especially in the final 10 minutes of the game.

Monaghan Line Out
Edel Corrigan, Sharon Courtney, Una Mc Nally, Christina Reilly, Lavina Connolly, Nicola Fahy, Aoife Mc Anespie, Amanda Casey, Cora Courtney, Ciara Mc Anespie (1-2), Catriona Mc Connell (0-4 3fr). Ellen Mc Carron (0-3), Therese Mc Nally (0-2 1f), Grainne Mc Nally (0-1), Caoimhe Mohan (0-1) Subs used Margaret Treanor

Corks scores Valerie Mulcahy (1 penalty 3 2fr) Amy O Shea (1-1) Juliet Murphy (0-1 fr) Orlaigh Farmer (0-1) Grace Kearney (0-1)

Monaghan have this weekend free to re charge their batteries in preparation for their next game in the league. Una Mc Nally picked up an injury on Sunday last so we wish her a speedy recovery.

A big thank you once again to all those who came out on Sunday to support the girls. Special mention to the group of Doohamlet girls who came out in their numbers. They got a chance to meet the girls after the game which finished off what was a great day out for them. Also thank you to the Emyvale club for their help in catering for both teams and indeed any supporters in need of refreshments.

Minors
Minor training continues on Sunday at 11am in Cloghan. We are hoping to have a challenge match and Tommy will contact all girls as soon as it’s confirmed. Only two weeks to go before our first match against Cavan so we need to see everyone.

U16s
Training for U16s continues this Saturday in Cloghan at 12 o clock. The panel is going to be finalised then. There are a number of players who haven't been in attendance to date for various reasons, so Saturday is their last chance if they wish to be considered for the panel. It is important therefore that all players are in attendance.

U14s
Under14 trials had to be cancelled on Saturday last due to the wet weather. With the Ulster blitz coming up on the 5th March,
it is important that all players make the effort to come out this Saturday. Training will be at 12 in Cloghan. If there is a change to this, players will be notified.

Mc Keever Sports Ulster Schools All Star Awards
On Friday last the 2011 Ulster schools All Star Awards were presented. 20 players from throughout the province were selected after coming through a rigorous selection process. Monaghan had 3 players selected. Laura Mc Eneaney(Corduff), Caoimhe Mohan(Truagh) and Barbara Ward (Corduff/Carrick). All 3 players have shown great promise during the year not just for their schools but also for club and county. Laura Mc Eneaney made her breakthrough to the senior county panel last year. Caoimhe is already showing the talent she has winning an All Star at the O Dowd Cup weekend on the senior county team and is still a minor. Barbara Ward won the U16 county player of the Year Award for 2010. On behalf of the county board well done. The Ulster selection will take on the Connacht Schools All stars tomorrow night.

Delegates Meeting
New league and championship proposals for the coming year were given to clubs at the delegates meeting on Monday last. A special meeting to deal with these new proposals will take place so clubs are asked to give them due consideration. More details next week.

Mary Grimes was appointed assistant secretary.

Proposals for fundraising were discussed. More discussions to take place. Details to follow.

Monaghan Beat Mayo - Notes 15th Feb 2011
Seniors

GRAINNE MC NALLY MARKS HER RETURN WITH 2 GOALS AS MONAGHAN BEAT MAYO

The senior ladies continued their winning ways with another win over Mayo on Sunday last with Grainne Mc Nally making a welcome return scoring 2 excellent goals. Following their win over Tryone, Monaghan once again showed great character in overcoming a new look but strong Mayo side.

Monaghan opened the scoring with Therese Mc Nally scoring a point. Mayo however responded with 2 points in succession from Cora Staunton, one from a free . A great move involving Therese Mc Nally, Ciara Mc Anespie and Tina Mc Connell levelled affairs, with Tina scoring an excellent point. Great defending by Una Mc Nally denied Cora Staunton putting Mayo ahead. Monaghan started to surge forward but were off target with a number of wides. Aoife Mc Anespie put Monaghan in front after a great run from the half back line. Therese Mc Nally was fouled going through on goals with the resulting free converted by Tina Mc Connell putting Monaghan 2 points up with 18 mins of the first half gone. Ellen Mc Carron got her name on the scoresheet but Cora Staunton once again narrowed the gap for Mayo with a point. Grainne Mc Nally was introduced for Monaghan and started to cause the Mayo defence problems. Ciara Mc Anespie put Tina Mc Connell through for what looked like a certain goal but she was fouled resulting in Monaghan being awarded a penalty. The goalkeeper, Yvonne Byrne was sin binned as a result, and had to be replaced. Tina's penalty was just wide and this was followed by a number of wides by the Monaghan forwards. It looked as if Monaghan were going to rue the missed chances with Cora Staunton converting 2 more frees for Mayo leaving the sides all square with about a minute to go to half time. A final push forward by Monaghan saw a great move rewarded with a great goal by Grainne Mc Nally. The half time whistle blew leaving Monaghan 1-5 to 0-5 ahead.

The second half started with Monaghan hitting another wide and Mayo pushed forward once again. They were awarded a free which was converted by Cora Staunton. Therese Mc Nally added another point for Monaghan and it was Monaghan who gained the momentum with further points from Ellen Mc Carron and Amanda Casey. On the other end of the pitch Monaghan's defence held out with Una Mc Nally and Christina Reilly defending excellently. Grainne Mc Nally scored her second goal of the day increasing Monaghan's lead. Monaghan's Ciara Mc Anespie was put through on goal and collided with the goalkeeper but was adjudged to have fouled and was sin binned. This gave Mayo a lifeline and they started to surge forward once again but once again the Monaghan defence stayed strong denying the Mayo forwards .and it was Amanda Casey once again who added another point for Monaghan putting them 2-9 to 0-6 ahead. Mayo did reduce the gap with a goal by their number 12 Triona Mc Nicholas but another sin bin this time for the Mayo no 13 Sinead Murphy gave Monaghan the momentum once again. Three points in succession for Monaghan , 2 from Tina Mc Connell and 1 from Ciara Mc Anespie put the final score beyond doubt and it was Tina Mc Connell who finished Monaghan's scoring of the day with a wonderful goal and a point. Mayo added 2 points to their total with another Cora Staunton free and a point from Triona McNicholas. The final score Monaghan 3-13 Mayo 1-8

Once again a good performance by Monaghan. The pitch was heavy but all the girls worked hard and in particular their defence with only 3of Mayo's forwards scoring. Cora Staunton did score 7 points but 5 were from frees and any attempt she made at breaking the Monaghan defence proved fruitless. Midfield worked tirelessly throughout and once again the forward line showed great promise. They did however miss a lot of chances which on another day could have proved costly. This Sunday they take on Cork. This will be a tough encounter for the Monaghan girls and they will have to up their game once again if they are to keep their unbeaten record.
Monaghan line out : Edel Corrigan, Esabel Kieran, Una Mc Nally, Christina Reilly, Lavina Connolly, Sharon Courtney, Aoife Mc Anespie(0-1) Amanda Casey (0-2), Cora Courtney, Nicola Fahy, Emma Byrne, Therese Mc Nally (0-2), Ellen Mc Carron(0-2), Catriona Mc Connell(1-5 3fr), Ciara Mc Anespie (0-1). Subs used Grainne Mc Nally(2-0), Magaret Treanor, Anita Newell

On behalf of the girls and management a big thank you to the supporters who travelled up to Claremorris on Sunday last. Hope to see your support once again this Sunday when they take on Cork. This game is fixed for Emyvale. Throw in 2pm

Monaghan Ladies GFC Notes 7th Feb 2011
Seniors

Monaghan got their National league off to the perfect start with an impressive win over All Ireland finalists Tyrone, the final scoreline 2-14 to 0-7. After beating an experimental Tryone side in the O Dowd Cup, this proved a for tougher encounter, with Tryone starting with a more familiar line out, but were still without the services of their All Star forward Joeline Donnelly and nominees Maura Kelly and Shannon Quinn. The final scoreline to be fair was not a true reflector on the game.

Monaghan started the livlier with some excellent attacking play and it was Caoimhe Mohan who opened the scoring with a fine point. This was followed by another fine point by Ciara Mc Anespie. A free converted by Catriona Mc Connell put Monaghan 3 points up . Ellen got her name on the scoresheet with a fine point leaving Monaghan 4 points up with just 10 minutes gone. Gemma Begley hit Tyrone's first point with Cathy Donnelly and Niamh Woods adding to their total with a further 2 points before Caoimhe Mohan struck the first goal of the game for Monaghan. Cathy Donnelly added a further point for Tyrone to reduce the margin but another goal and point by top-scorer on the day, Tina Mc Connell added to Monaghan's lead. Isobel Kierans got sinned binned for Monaghan going into the latter stages of the half, and Tyrone started to surge forward. Monaghan's defenders held out well limiting Tryone just to one final point of the half, this time from a free converted by Gemma Begley Further points from Ellen Mc Carron and Therese Mc Nally left Monaghan going into half time leading by 8 points
Half time Score Monaghan 2-7 Tyrone 0-5

Tyrone started the second half with more urgency and Clodagh Poyntz reduced Monaghan's lead with a fine point. Two fine saves by Monaghan's goalkeeper Edel Corrigan denied Tryone what looked like certain goals. Gemma Begley reduced the lead further, but that was to be Tryone's final score and 7 unanswered points from Monaghan(2 each from Ellen Mc Carron, Therese Mc Nally and Tina Mc Connell, and one from Caoimhe Mohan) finished the game off, with Monaghan winning on a final scoreline of 2-14 to 0-7.

This was the start to the league that Monaghan would have hoped for, but to be fair the scoreline is a bit flattering. Monaghan's defence were made work extremely hard throughout with the full back line of Lavina Connolly, Una Mc Nally and Christina Reilly being made work very hard over the hour. The half back line of Aoife Mc Anespie, Isobel Kierans and Sharon Courtney were also made work hard and Edel Corrigan had to pull off some fine saves to deny the Tyrone girls. Amanda Casey and Cora Courtney worked tirelessly throughout but worringly for Monaghan, Amanda picked up an injury and had to be replaced. Monaghan's forwards looked very sharp scoring some fine scores.

Monaghan Line Out: Edel Corrigan, Isabel Kierans, Una Mc Nally, Christina Reilly, Lavina Connolly, Sharon Courtney, Aoife Mc Anespie, Amanda Casey, Cora Courtney, Nicola Fahy, Caoimhe Mohan (1-2), Therese Mc Nally (0-3), Ellen Mc Carron (0-4), Catriona Mc Connell (1-4)Ciara Mc Anespie (0-1) Subs used Margaret Treanor(Truagh) Emma Byrne(Corduff)

Overall a good day for Monaghan picking up 2 points but still some work needs to be done. They travel to Mayo this Sunday.Venue has yet to be confirmed. This will be a tough test for the Monaghan girls as Mayo well be keen to put down their marker, after the unfortunate problems they had last year. Monaghan also have the injurey worry to Amanda Casey so Monaghan will have to up their game once again if they are to collect a further 2 points.

We wish both the team and management the very best of luck.

Monaghan created a little bit of history on Sunday last when they became the first ever county team to win the O Dowd Cup beating UUJ who were going for a fourth consecutive title by a single point.

This was an excellent game of football with the lead exchanging hands five times throughout. UUJ raced into a 2 point lead within 6 minuters with points from Adele Gallagher and Sinead Fegan. Monaghan narrowed the lead with a free from Catriona Mc Connell with 9 minutes gone. Monaghan then were awarded a penalty after Ciara Mc Anespie was brought down as she was through for goal. Tina blasted to the back of the net giving Monaghan the lead.

Ciara Mc Anespie had to go off through injury and was replaced by Emma Byrne.UUJ responded with points from Adele Gallagher, Aoife Mc Donnell and Rachel Fulton to restore their lead, but it was Monaghan who went into the break in the lead, with points from Ellen Mc Carron and Isobel Kierans

Half Time score Monaghan 1-3 UUJ 0-5

The pattern of the game continued, with the lead exchanging hands again after 4 minutes when Aoife Mc Donnell scored of a rebound from an excellent Edel Corrigan save . Some great defending by both teams saw scores kept to a minimum. Referee Eileen Jones sent 4 players, two from each side to the sin bin which saw both teams playing 13 a side for 10 minutes of the game. With 10 minutes to go it was anybodys game. Monaghan reduced the deficit to a single point with a Tina Mc Connell free and another free converted by Tina levelled the scores with 9 minutes remaining. The momemtum was with Monaghan now and 3 points in a row, one by Therese Mc Nally and 2 by Caoimhe Mohan put Monaghan 3 in the clear. UUJ managed to reduce the gap to the minimum when Sinead Fegan and Lorraine Heavron added two points.

Monaghans defence held out however to claim their first title of the year.

This was a great performance by the Monaghan girls after overcoming Queens in the semi final on Saturday and will be good preparations for them going into the Bord Gais League.

Therese Mc Nally was awarded Player Of The Tournament and Monaghan were awarded 7 All Stars - Edel Corrigan, Sharon Courtney, Christine O Reilly, Isobel Kierans, Therese Mc Nally, Catriona Mc Connell and Caoimhe Mohan.

"MONAGHAN CONVINCING WIN OVER TYRONE IN O DOWD CUP"

Monaghan opened their O Dowd cup campaign with a convincing win over Tyrone. Tyrone were missing quite a number of their first fifteen but it was Monaghans workrate throughout that caught the eye.

Monaghan took control right from the start with the forward lines of Caoimhe Mohan, Tina Mc Connell, Ciara Mc Anespie, Ellen Mc Carron, Nicola Fahy and Therese Mc Nally causing the Tryone defence serious problems. Amanda Casey and Cora Courtney controlled the midfield area and in defence Monaghan held off any of the challenges that Tyrone put up. Monaghan went in at half time leading by 3-15 to no score.

The second half continued in much the same way with Monaghan refusing to take the foot of the pedal and they continued to pressurise the Tyrone defence. Tyrone to their credit fought hard but anytime they pressed forward, Monaghans defence proved too hard to break and in the end Monaghan ran out convincing winners on a scoreline of 5-27 to 0-0.

Monaghan Line Out : Linda Martin, Isobel Kierans, Una Mc Nally, Christina O Reilly, Lavina Connolly, Sharon Courtney(0-1), Aoife Mc Anespie(0-2), Amanda Casey(0-4), Cora Courtney, Nicola Fahy, Ciara Mc Anespie (1-4), Ellen Mc Carron (0-2), Caoimhe Mohan (1-4), Therese Mc Nally (1-2 1f), Tina Mc Connell (2-7 5f) Subs used Joanne Courtney(0-1), Anita Newell and Margaret Treanor.

Monaghan now look forward to the semi final of the Dowd Cup where they meet Queens University this Saturday, January 29th January in Jordanstown Belfast.

On Thursday,  in Cloghan, the girls have a challenge game against DCU. Throw in at 8 o clock.
